September 2002

Welcome back to Nottingham after the holidays. Or, if you are new to Nottingham Trent University, welcome to Nottingham. It’s a great place to live and to study. You’ll love it here.

Since June 2000 NET have been working to build Nottingham’s tram which runs right through the heart of Nottingham Trent’s city campus.

Follow the tram tracks and you will discover that from then if you’re heading south you will be able to take a tram right through the city centre and down to the train station. Heading away from town the tram will take you out to Hyson Green, Bulwell, and on to Hucknall.

Now that there are more and more sections of completed track on roads which are used by traffic it's important, if you are a motorist, to take extra care, especially in wet conditions. Pedestrians should also be aware that although the tram lines are laid flush with the road, it is possible to slip or trip on them, so again extra care should be taken. If you are a cyclist, you should try to avoid tram lines if at all possible, but if you have to cross them, then you must do so at a wide angle to avoid your wheels becoming caught in the track groove.

Enjoy your time in Nottingham. Most of you will still be around when public services start and will benefit from the tram yourselves. We look forward to welcoming you aboard.

It may seem like a good idea at the time, but messing about with our worksites is not big and it's not clever.

We would urge all students to resist the temptation to push over our fencing, or take or damage roadsigns or other worksite-related materials. It's adding tens of thousands of pounds to the cost of the project and potentially places people in danger. There's a reason the signs and fences are there, and that is to inform and protect the public - especially motorists - who could easily get hurt if someone thinks it would be a great prank to remove them. The problem has got beyond a joke on Waverley Street, where we have had to employ round-the-clock security guards.

So please, by all means enjoy yourselves in this great city of ours, but don't get carried away and wreck things on the way home. It's not funny - it's vandalism. And the laughter will ring a bit hollow if you end up arrested, disciplined by the college or, worse still, harming someone through your actions.
