A major public consultation exercise was carried out in late 2001/early 2002. Detailed brochures were distributed to thousands of local residents, who were asked for their views on route options. The independent report on their views can be read on the reports page. The web pages created for the consultation have been archived here for reference purposes. The decision on whether to pursue the routes to West Bridgford routes has been deferred, awaiting further reporting on development proposals in Rushcliffe and the Government commissioned A453 and A52 multi-modal studies.

All across the world major towns and cities are considering how to deal with problems of traffic congestion. We all love our cars, they can't be "uninvented" and can offer convenient, fast means of transport to work and for social purposes. But cars take up road space, cause pollution and traffic congestion - especially on some roads and at peak hours. We certainly don't want to stop people owning cars, but we all have to consider using them differently.

That is where a high quality, fast, safe, convenient public transport alternative has to come into play. Doing nothing about traffic congestion is not an option, nor is building endless new roads in every area. Over many years the City Council and County Council, together with our partners in the private sector and District Councils, have studied the most effective way to offer this alternative and believe modern light rail systems are an essential part of a comprehensive approach to the problems we all face. Not surprisingly, we reached the same view as many other cities across the world, and now is the time to consider building a network of tram lines in Nottingham to build on the benefits of Line One, already under construction.

But although they are undoubtedly a good idea, trams are not simply going to be forced upon you. There are many assessments to be made on the feasibility of each option which must satisfy the people involved in the project - and the Government. An important part of this process is to gauge public opinion, so we are currently at the early stages of opening a dialogue. It appears there is widespread support for the plans but that there are some localised concerns which, quite rightly, should be addressed before we proceed further.
