Trams are among the safest vehicles on road or rail,
and NET has some special design features to make it as safe as possible:
The rails are laid flush with the road surface
and have an anti-skid surface alongside them
The layout of the track has been designed so
that wherever possible, the alignment is away from the normal path of
other vehicles on the road
Alternative cycle paths running parallel but
away from NET Line One have been developed, and road markings at certain
points along the line guide cyclists across the tracks at a safe angle
Pedestrian links around tram stops have been
improved and tactile paving is used at the ends and edge of tram stop
platforms
Traffic signals at most junctions along the
route change to give the tram priority
The tram drivers are professionally trained
to look out for potential hazards
The trams are fitted with a bell to warn of
their approach if necessary
Trams travel slowly in areas like Old Market
Square where there are lots of people
They have three different braking systems -
including an emergency brake which allows the vehicle to stop within its
own length when travelling below 30mph.
Trams are a welcome, fun and safe addition to Nottingham.
To make sure everyone enjoys Nottingham Express Transit, here are some
rules to follow:
Motorists
Must not obstruct the tramway
Make allowances for bikes and motorbikes making different manoeuvres
Where possible, avoid driving directly on the track, especially
in wet or icy conditions
Never overtake trams at tramstops in the street
Cyclists

Cross tram tracks at a wide angle so that your wheels don't become
stuck in the rail's groove
Use the designated crossing points where possible
Use alternative cycle routes parallel to but away from NET Line
One so you can avoid the tracks altogether if possible
Take extra care in wet and icy weather
Pedestrians/passengers

Wherever possible, use designated crossings
Tram tracks can become slippery underfoot in wet and icy weather
- it's best to steer clear of them if possible
Stay alert to the presence of trams and listen
out for their warning bell
Never cross tracks without looking both ways
first and do not run across tracks
Make sure you are not hidden by parked vehicles
when crossing
Always stand well clear of the tram path - the
space it takes up while it's moving and turning corners - so that it can
pass by safely
Stand back from the edge of tram stop platforms
as the tram approaches
Keep clear of tram doors
The 750Volt DC power lines are 5.8 metres above
the ground and no-one should make any attempt to touch or interfere with
them
